A vast topic Safar which you address beautifully with the linking of sandcastles… in my lack of philosophical knowledge I would have used that same word, ephemeral but perhaps there too is not wrong.

I wonder how many evenings have been spent discussing existentialism? Discussing theories of known existentialists Simone de Beauvoir, Albert Camus Jean-Paul Sartre? In France the philosophy exploded somewhere around the beginning of the last century and is still an important talking point around intellectual dinner tables.. the importance of confronting life’s meaning / meaningless remains…

Interestingly two of the images in your letter are blocked in this country, which intrigues me… Samsāra I have never seen either. I will.

My use of the term ephemeral (beautiful word) was in the context of art. Ephemeral art, according to the Tate, is: "a work of art that only occurs once, like a happening, and cannot be embodied in any lasting object to be shown in a museum or gallery." That then begs the question of what is considered a work of art. And also some ephemeral art has been displayed in galleries (more on that later).

I'd love to have been at a dinner party with the French existentialists! I was once invited to an "intellectual dinner table" which would have included Patrick Stewart (Star Trek, Captain Picard) who was the Chancellor of the Uni of Huddersfield at the time. You can imagine my disappointment when it snowed so heavily nobody was able to get there. Unfortunately cancelled rather than postponed.

So, what could be blocked? I'm guessing YouTube videos - but I would have expected if they were viewable in Portugal that would apply to the rest of the EU? Susie, would you let me know which of these is problematic, so I have an idea for future posts?

The first, if you click on it, should have brought you to source:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/jb912/4430034185/ (pic of a sandcastle, free to use and share, attribution only)

The second was a like short documentary on the Texas SandFest: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qNIWPZssBuo&t=1s

The third is the Samsara official trailer, I used the YouTube link to this, but they also show it on their own website: https://www.barakasamsara.com/media

The last was an edited excerpt from the film which showed the creation and destruction of a sand mandala: https://youtu.be/Md6SuPdA-mo

Thank you, Susie!

Hi Safar, apologies for the delay I was swept off by family obscurities, as is normal around here…

Ok the only link that isn’t working this morning is the last one, this is the same in your post also. I’m not sure what changed between yesterday and today but neither of the last two videos were permitted:

This is what was written this morning,

“Video unavailable

This video contains content from ARP Selection, who has blocked it in your country on copyright grounds” pretty standard although I am still not certain why?

I hope that helps.

That helps a lot! I would have guessed that one as it was clips from the movie, so was the most likely to have copyright issues. The first issue of it being two was more of a puzzle. Thank you for taking the time to get at the problem!
